We are already used to smart phones and smart TVs. Many devices around us are now ‘smart’. But what about smart homes?

According to a recent study published by researchandmarkets.com, 178 million homes in Europe and North America will be smart homes by 2024.

In our country, the smart home market is growing by 30% annually, while only 5% of new homes are in this segment.

It is generally known that the most popular residential automation solutions are intelligent lighting, blinds and temperature control, sound and energy efficiency.

However, the smart home concept and related home automation systems are much more comprehensive. They include a wide range of solutions for controlling, monitoring and automating a home.

There are seven basic categories into which they fall: security and access control systems, temperature and energy efficiency control systems, audio-visual and entertainment systems, lighting and window control systems, medical support systems, and last but not least home appliances and home robots.

Today’s smart home technology thus offers homeowners a high level of convenience, security and thermal efficiency through the control of specific devices and applications.

Imagine a home that you can monitor and control almost entirely from a mobile phone or tablet. No more worrying about forgotten appliances or light bulbs left on. No more wasting energy or time doing things you can schedule and automate.

Who wouldn’t love to be able to control the lights, sound system and temperature from the couch, or be able to see the state of the house from a distant beach?

Some security systems can even respond in the event of a fire, unlocking doors, alerting the fire brigade and lighting pathways.

Any appliance in your home that uses electricity can be included in your smart home network and controlled by you, anytime, anywhere. Whether you use voice command or remote control, tablet or smartphone, your home will always be at your fingertips. It’s that simple!

What’s more, thanks to the development of the IoT (Internet of Things) all these devices can be wirelessly interconnected so that they communicate with each other and form an ecosystem.

The long-term benefits have most to do with making energy consumption more efficient by ensuring, for example, that lights or household appliances are switched off or running optimally.

Finally, here are a few more examples of operations that can be included in a smart home:

Lighting your way to the bathroom at night
Your doors open automatically when you approach them
Your pets are automatically fed a preset amount of food
You create an ambient light according to each occasion
Programme your TV so your children can only watch it at certain times
Preset the temperature in your bedroom to rise so when you wake up it’s just right
Turn on the coffee machine in bed
Etc.
